Kurdaj had been reassigned to "The Krios Sector."
He had been given difficult assignments before...having worked his way up
through the ranks, his last assignment had been
as a commander of a fleet...a fleet that was located in the backwater of the
empire, used to reinforce the other fleets
during the war.
By the end of the war, Kurdaj was left with a fleet
that had been stripped of all but a few ships.
Regardless, after years of effort, he rebuilt it to a leaner version of its
former self.
With that rebuilding, Kurdaj became noticed by the high council and made few
friends.
There are those who believe his reassignment was due
to the tactics he used to get the job done.
He was unclear about all of the council's reasons
for the reassignment, but the reason that came to mind and the lips of others
was his lack of playing politics...always opting to fix the problem rather than
conspiring about what he would get out of it.
As Kurdaj arrived at Battle Base 5, he looked
around, trying to size it up...
"This base has seen better days" he was heard
muttering.
He made his way to command where he was greeted by a
mix of military and civilians, all clamoring for his time.
Kurdaj spoke "Where is my office?" as one of the officers pointed to a door on
the upper deck.
Kurdaj pushed past the gathered and made his way to
the door. He stopped for a moment...then turned and looked at the crowd.
With one word, the crowd dispersed.
For those that had bothered to learn anything about
their new commander, they knew he was direct but fair and meant what he said.
Now, that word was "Tomorrow."
He turned again and walked thru the open door.
He looked around the office, remembering his last
attempt at occupying an office...that had not gone well.
He was of the opinion that a leader needed to be out
front among his command, not sitting in an office pushing reports.
Now he had to find a way to resign himself to doing
the opposite of his nature and add the fact now he had to deal with civilians,
both Klingon and alien.
Kurdaj thought about it for a second...a smile
widened on his face.
Outside in the command center, all that was heard
was loud laughter coming from the commander's office.
Most were unclear as to its meaning, but a couple
who had served with him before smiled inwardly, knowing
changes were coming.
